In a sense, geologists create maps of the earth as it may have existed during different geologic eras. They prepare vertical-slice cross-sections, or side views , which show up anticlines, faults, and other features that resulted from changes in the earth over the span of millions of years. From these maps and cross-sections, together with knowledge of rocks, minerals, oil, and gas, the geologist tries to predict where oil and gas can be found.
