JOB DESCRIPTION: Geologists apply their knowledge of different rocks and minerals to search for oil and natural gas. these rocks and minerals, and the oil and gas they sometimes contain or surround, are found at different depths below the surface and in different structures. Geologists compile vast amounts of data on underground structures and on rocks where oil and gas have been found, they categorize and correlate this data, and, with the aid of new scientific developments, develop maps of the earth’s crust. In a sense, geologists create maps of the earth as it may have existed during different geologic eras. They prepare vertical-slice cross-sections, or side views , which show up anticlines, faults, and other features that resulted from changes in the earth over the span of millions of years.
