Mud Technician

JOB TITLE: MUD TECHNICIAN
JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the close supervision of the Driller, is responsible for maintaining the proper mud weights indicated by the Driller.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Operates mud pumps, shakers, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Responsible for conditioning mud according to specifications which include sampling, conducting tests, and adding proper amounts of mud components and chemicals.
- Repairs and maintains auxiliary equipment.
- Lubricates auxiliary equipment.
- Cleans up work area and maintains in an orderly and safe condition.
- Performs the primary thinking called for and encompassed by this overall Job Definition.
- Performs other related duties as may be required at the direction of the immediate supervisor.
- Operates mud unit and all related equipment.
- Determines well depth, pressure, water fluid levels, if proper connections are available, proper placement of unit, how much water, mud and the proper mix of chemicals.
- Analyzes mud that is circulated through oil and gas well boreholes during drilling operations using special testing equipment to detect presence of oil and gas, and interprets findings to locate production stratum.
- Detects pressure of gas in mud by reading dial of gas-detection meter hooked up to detection device in mud.
- May inspect samples of mud under ultraviolet light to determine, on basis experience, type and quality of oil present.
- Keep records of dial readings and tests made and calculates from them depth in well formations found to contain oil and gas.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: High School education required.
